Performances by António Olaio and António Poppe
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Galeria Quadrum, on 16 September, the Municipal Galleries will inaugurate the exhibition Quadrum at 50, a cultural bonfire, based on a curatorial project by Paulo Mendes.
The year 2023 marks half a century of the gallery’s historical journey, unique in its vision and experimentalism in the Portuguese artistic context. Throughout its many decades of operation, Galeria Quadrum has played host to a myriad of seminal artists who have left their mark in the art world. This exhibition includes historical works by António Olaio, António Poppe, Ernesto de Sousa, Alberto Carneiro, João Vieira, Jorge Molder, Julião Sarmento, Miguel Palma, Cristina Mateus, Paulo Mendes, Fernando Brito, Alexandra do Carmo, Ana Hatherly, Miguel Leal, Salette Tavares, E. M. de Melo e Castro, as well as paper and video documentation from the Gallery’s documentary collection and other archives.
The opening of this exhibition – with performances by António Olaio and António Poppe based on texts from Quadrum’s exhibition archive – was conceived by the project’s curator to be an inclusive and all-encompassing celebration not only for the artistic community of artists, curators, representatives of institutions, galleries, collectors, and the press, but also for the general public.
Text by Paulo Mendes:
1973, Dulce d’Agro opens Galeria Quadrum on 22 November with a group exhibition entitled Modern Portuguese Artists. A few months later, and with only two exhibitions under its belt, the Carnation Revolution takes place, ending a half-century-long fascist dictatorial regime. In the turbulent 1970s, culture and politics were in permanent turmoil and transformation and the Quadrum Gallery would become one of the privileged places to witness these changes in Portuguese society, both in its cultural thinking and in terms of political action, in which many of these artists were engaged.
As she stated in an interview, Dulce d’Agro ignited a cultural bonfire fuelled by a community of creators and financially sustained by her. The story of her life is intertwined with the story of the Quadrum gallery. In the ephemerality of its action, it illuminated the shadows of a Portugal marked by the leaden years of the Estado Novo, with the creative freedom displayed at Quadrum transforming the modes of production, internationalisation, dissemination and presentation of exhibitions.
The list of artists presented at Quadrum over fifty years of exhibitions is extensive. In a first phase, between 1973 and 1995, under the direction of Dulce d’Agro, we highlight names such as Alberto Carneiro, Ana Hatherly, Álvaro Lapa, Ana Vieira, António Palolo, António Sena, E.M. de Melo e Castro, Eduardo Nery, Eurico Gonçalves, Fernando Calhau, Graça Pereira Coutinho, Ernesto de Sousa, Irene Buarque, João Vieira, Joaquim Bravo, Joaquim Rodrigo, Jorge Pinheiro, José Barrias, José Conduto, José de Carvalho, José de Guimarães, Julião Sarmento, Karel Appel, Leonel Moura, Manuel Baptista, Nikias Skapinakis, Noronha da Costa, Patrícia Garrido, Pedro Calapez, Pedro Portugal, Pires Vieira and Salette Tavares, many of whom collaborated with her on a close and regular basis.
In the final phase of her direction, she once again presented some artists who would become fundamental in the early 1990s: Cristina Mateus, Carlos Vidal, Fernando Brito, Miguel Leal, Miguel Palma, Rui Serra and Paulo Mendes.
The end of the century coincided with the end of an era: Dulce d’Agro (1915-2011) fell ill and was unable to continue to accompany the fate of her gallery, and her lease with the Lisbon City Council was terminated. This was followed by an uncertain period for Quadrum, with intermittent closures interrupted between 1999 and 2005 by a programme under the direction of António Cerveira Pinto and his Aula do Risco. Later, in 2010, the Lisbon City Council, through its municipal company EGEAC, took back control of the gallery space and its programming.
A new generation of creators, along with historical survey exhibitions, would make up different proposals and curatorial cycles such as: Ângela Ferreira, André Guedes, Ana Jotta, Alexandra do Carmo, Ana Mendieta, André Romão, António Bolota, António Ole, Bruno Pacheco, Carla Filipe, Catarina Botelho, Diogo Evangelista, Dalila Gonçalves, Francisco Queirós, João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Manuel Zimbro, Manuel Santos Maia, Mónica de Miranda, Pedro Barateiro, Projecto Teatral, Pedro Neves Marques, Sara Bichão, Sara & André and Vasco Araújo.
2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of a gallery that is both historic and unique in its programme. We celebrate the memory of the mythical gallerist Dulce d’Agro, without forgetting that her personal history is also testimony to the endemic precariousness of an artistic and cultural system. In this socially and politically conservative country, both yesterday and today, there is a certain inability to dialogue in a sustained way with contemporary thought.
“With Quadrum, I have participated in international fairs since 1977, publicising the work and creation of Portuguese artists. I am proud to have opened this path for Portuguese art. Through various collaborations at Quadrum, I have organised courses on modern art and aesthetics and promoted printmaking courses with the aim of raising awareness and informing the public about contemporary modern art. With this activity, I created a small cultural bonfire that warmed the spirits of art lovers like me.” Dulce d’Agro, 1990
