Budapest Cycle – Bruno Cidra

Bruno Cidra

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Cortina [Curtain] by Bruno Cidra, which was on view at Quadrum Gallery between 27 March and 10 May 2015. This exhibition was part of the Budapest Cycle, an initiative of the Lisbon City Hall in partnership with the Municipality of Budapest. Through this program, two Portuguese artists are selected to develop an artistic project during a one-month residency in Budapest and two Hungarian artists were selected to develop a project also during a one-month residency in Lisbon. This volume contains photographic documentation of the works exhibited, including installation views, and a text by José Marmeleira.

“However, before we talk about sculpture and the reaction that it prompts from the viewer, it is worth talking about drawing. In an exercise of imagination, the Quadrum space was put down on a sheet upon which we can see strokes, jottings, lines, shapes and angles. Everything began on paper, or to be more precise, in Bruno Cidra’s notebooks. The artist stated: “Drawing forms the basis for every decision in my work. In those notebooks I work out the characteristics of the space, gauge the architectural ratios and define limits. [The drawings] help me to understand the space, and only then can I grasp the specific requirements of the sculpture project”.”

– José Marmeleira
