The city of Lisbon, through the EGEAC–CML Municipal Galleries, selected the Portuguese artist Eugénia Mussa to present a project room at ARCO Madrid. The Municipal Galleries – EGEAC comprise five contemporary art exhibition spaces: Galeria Quadrum, Pavilhão Branco, Galeria da Boavista, the Lisbon Culture Contemporary Art Collection Space, and the East Tower at Cordoaria Nacional.
Eugénia Mussa (1978, Maputo, Mozambique) lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. She studied drawing and painting at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, Lisbon (2009), and completed a Foundation Course in Fine Arts at City and Islington College, London (2002). Her painting practice is shaped by the diasporic experience, though it is never confined to it. Rather than directly confronting African identity, Mussa allows it to resonate subtly, interwoven with fragments of memory, imagery and affect gathered across time and space.
