The exhibition O tempo maior que o tempo (The time greater than time), on display in the Pavilhão Branco, stems from an interest in establishing potential intersecting dialogues between the visual production of two artists from the same generation who share a series of concerns and procedures that make their respective paths converge: Paula Prates and Rita Gaspar Vieira.
Broadly interested – through different processes of making and thinking – in questions of perception, observation of the passing of time and its relationship with bodies, and the elements and various forms of matter that compose the domain of the real, both artists have developed individual projects that have allowed them to visually explore these relationships, also demonstrating their consideration of the space by adopting a site-specific approach.
With this in mind, we are proposing a ‘specific’ exhibition, supported in the relationship between the Pavilhão Branco building and its context (its location in the heart of a garden), in the configuration and symmetry of its interior space (a kind of open space split into four rooms that mirror one another horizontally and vertically), and in the expanded characteristics of its spatiality (broad transparent surfaces that allow natural light to penetrate, at the same time allowing a trans-dimensional and constantly evoked relationship between interior and exterior).
The notions of memory, impermanence and temporal transdimensionality are prized by both artists and permeate their conceptual practices. The selection of works in the exhibition is the result of a quest for an interconnection of gestures, materials and surfaces, marked by the passage, expansion and crystallisation of time. These are works that, as well as being evocative documents of a specific place and a specific moment in that place, are in themselves real and ever-mutating presences. Presented alongside a group of pre-existing works are various new works produced especially for the context of this exhibition.
