João Marçal

This catalogue accompanies João Marçal’s exhibition INNER 8000er, which was on view at the Pavilhão Branco between May 10 and September 30, 2018. Featuring a selection of paintings in various formats that were produced over several years, some of which specifically made for the exhibition at Pavilhão Branco, Sara Antónia Matos and Pedro Faro curated the exhibition. The publication includes texts by the curators and by the artists João Marçal and Hugo Canoilas. It has been designed with a detachable dust jacket.

“Despite the flatness of the image, and a certain or apparent semantic emptying, and the consequent hermeneutic failure in the viewer (resulting in the virtual impossibility of interpretation), Marçal’s works still invoke an extensive heritage of technical and philosophical reflections on the contemporary image.”
-Sara Antónia Matos e Pedro Faro

“When I was little, one of my morning habits on the weekend was getting into my parents’ bed to eat bread or biscuits. My mother was not there and there was only my father still asleep. Usually I went there to eat during the most boring cartoons or the longer breaks between cartoons.”
-João Marçal

“The paintings appear light in their pale mid-tones, and heavy in the way in which I interpret them. They carry a relation with the absurd in life. Showing them in the White Pavilion, where they almost merge into space, brings the attention to that microscopic gaze that I referred above.
-Hugo Canoilas
