Publication that documents the exhibition «Mirror / Mirror», by Rui Sanches, which took place in Lisbon, at the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional between 29 September and 12 January 2020, curated by Delfim Sardo, and at the Museu Coleção Berardo between 10 October 2019 and January 12, 2020, curated by Sara Antónia Matos. It brings together essays by both curators, a brief biography of the artist and selected bibliography on his work.
“For Rui Sanches sculpture mobilizes the wide range of transformations that art underwent in the course of the long and winding road of modernism. In that sense, aside from the points of contact between the practices of sculpture and drawing (namely the relation between line and volume, the confrontation between organic and order, or the tectonic relation between open and closed fields), his sculptural work should be understood as an extensive reflection on the problems of sculpture or, more broadly, on the transformations of statuary into sculpture, of sculpture into three-dimensionality, or of the latter into ambient art, all of which have marked the last century and a half.”
–Delfim Sardo
“This drawing survey presents series of recent works in which the artist combines supports, media, and techniques: drawing on paper, photography, and wall constructions in a range of materials. This plurality of approaches allows us to see how the artist moves between these without drawing becoming subsidiary to sculpture, or vice versa. Putting into play multiple references, namely from history of art , the set of works reveals a philosophy that comes off the plane to invade the space and that, simultaneously, in an inverse movement, returns to the surface of the paper as if tearing up its two-dimensionality, perforating it and creating depth.”
