Catalogue of the exhibition Footnote 15: A Prototype, which took place at Galeria Boavista between February 19 and May 30, 2022, curated by Barbara Piwowarska.
The publication features texts by Barbara Piwowarska, Tobi Maier, a booklet with dialogues between Ana Cardoso and Tomás Cunha Ferreira, and photographs from the exhibition as well as other iterations of the Footnote project.
¬¬“A prototype is an early form given to a material that can be tested in the laboratories of art. Its essential qualities are process and materialization. Inhabiting the peculiar status of the unfinished and incomplete work, it has persisted as a crucial modus operandi for the avant gardes over the decades. As a model subject to modification, the exhibition at Galeria da Boavista was designed as such a prototype.”
– Barbara Piwowarska
“What do I identify with? I identify with the most abstract legacy of painting, and although that doesn’t exclude other things it is what I’m interested in as it allows me a type of freedom that I consider important.”
– Ana Cardoso
“But as I kept working I soon realised that it’s not like that. Sometimes one thing doesn’t lead to another. Sometimes this thing leads nowhere. And I found out that in my work I want a thing that leads nowhere, I want a thing to not lead to another.”
– Tomás Cunha Ferreira
“Curated by Barbara Piwowarska and developed in collaboration with the artist Ana Cardoso, the exhibition Footnote 15: A Prototype was the 15th installment in a series that began in 2010.”
– Tobi Maier
