Hoje, nada

Daniel Blaufuks

This bilingual catalogue is published on the occasion of Daniel Blaufuks’s exhibition Hoje, Nada [Today, Nothing], which was on view at Pavilhão Branco Gallery between September 22 and November 24, 2019. Alongside exhibition views, this publication features an introduction by the director of the Municipal Galleries Tobi Maier, as well as texts by the exhibition curator Sérgio Mah, artist Rui Chafes, and writer João Miguel Fernandes Jorge.

“Over the last twenty years the artists oeuvre has taken further turns, yet his devotion to research and represent private moments as well as historical time have remained a constant. Thus, the paramount position of Blaufuks practice is also due to his engagement with collective memory, featured in the exhibition Today, Nothing (…).”
– Tobi Maier

“All these images of the everyday appear to contain very little. They have little to show or tell. Absolute deception. We must ask: what experience of the real is provoked by each im – age, when nothing seems to happen? How does the image look at us and link us to a past? In what way are we projected by each image beyond the visible, beyond what can be represent – ed?”
– Sérgio Mah

“The world around him, all those shimmering lights and the continuous flux of people, all that suddenly seemed more ephemeral and fragile to him than ever. He felt abandoned. At that instant, everything appeared to have a momentary existence, like a fleeting illusion.”
– Rui Chafes

“The one who writes. Photography is, among all the visual arts and together with cinema, the best writing; the one who writes and waits for opportunities to act: waits for the best weather, the best light, the precise shade. Blaufuks writes photography as an art of duration, on a broad time, and opens up in luminosity, that is to say, in symbolic reduction, the moment, the object – the glass of milk – silent transformation.”
– João Miguel Fernandes Jorge
